GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATIONS

This half-day course will give an overview of the changes to data protection introduced by the General Data Protection Regulation 2016 (GDPR). This will become law on 25th May 2018.  It is the most significant updating of the law relating to personal data in two decades and includes the (qualified) “right to be forgotten”, the creation of a statutory “data protection officer” and the obligation to have explicit consent to process data.

The first session will cover:

  • What is the GDPR
  • Why data protection needs to change.
  • The new six principles
  • Legal grounds for processing data and why ‘consent’ is changing
  • Privacy Notices
  • The ‘right’ to be forgotten

The second session will cover:

  • What does this mean for you?
  • Prioritising the ‘to do’ list
  • Appointment of a Data Protection Officer
  • Changes to how you deal with requests for personal information
  • Having an up to date policy people know about and understand
  • Abolition of notification
  • Data security and the obligation to report breaches

 

The tutor is Liz Howlett, solicitor and former Head of Legal and Monitoring Officer who has been involved with Data Protection since 1998 and has had responsibility for compliance with information legislation at both district and unitary councils.
