How is GDPR working?

This half-day course will review the General Data Protection Regulation 2016 (‘GDPR’) which became law on 25th May 2018.

It has been a huge change for both public and private sector. Almost six months on we will look at how it has worked and at the detail of the new Data Protection Act 2018.

The first session will cover:

  • A reminder of what the GDPR is
  • The Data Protection Act 2018
  • Why data protection is changing.
  • How are the grounds for processing working in practice?
  • Why ‘consent’ is harder
  • Privacy Notices – are we providing enough?
  • The (qualified) ‘right’ to be forgotten

The second session will cover:

  • What does compliance look like?
  • What still needs to be done?
  • No requirement for a Data Protection Officer but who is doing the work?
  • New guidance on requests for personal information
  • Having up to date policies people know about and understand
  • New fee structure for registration
  • Data security and the obligation to report breaches within 72 hours
  • FAQ’s

The tutor is Liz Howlett, solicitor and former Head of Legal and Monitoring Officer who has been involved with Data Protection since 1998 and has had responsibility for compliance with information legislation at both district and unitary councils.

Registration and refreshment from 9.30am for a prompt start at 10am
